A Complete Guide to IELTS for Indian Students
Our Student's Success

Expert Advice from Apex Consultants
If you're planning to study abroad, work internationally, or apply for permanent residency in an English-speaking country, one requirement you're likely to encounter is the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). As one of the most widely accepted English proficiency tests in the world, IELTS plays a key role in your overseas journey.
At Apex Consultants, we help Indian students not just understand the IELTS format, but also prepare strategically to achieve a high score — opening the doors to top universities and visa success.
What is IELTS?
IELTS is a globally recognized English language proficiency test designed to assess your ability to listen, read, write, and speak in English. It is accepted by over 11,000 institutions in 140+ countries, including:
Study Destinations: United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, USA, Singapore, Germany, UAE, France, and more.
Immigration Authorities: Canada (IRCC), Australia (DHA), New Zealand Immigration, and UKVI for visa and PR applications.
Professional Bodies: For licensing in healthcare, engineering, accounting, and other regulated professions.
IELTS Test Structure
IELTS has two formats:
IELTS Academic – For students applying to colleges or universities abroad
IELTS General Training – For work experience, employment, or immigration purposes
Both versions consist of four sections:
1. Listening (30 minutes)
You will listen to 4 audio recordings and answer 40 questions. This section tests your ability to understand main ideas, opinions, and factual information.
2. Reading (60 minutes)
You will read 3 different passages and answer 40 questions. In the Academic version, passages are from books, journals, and newspapers. In the General version, they are from notices, advertisements, and workplace materials.
3. Writing (60 minutes)
Academic: Describe a graph/chart (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2)
General: Write a letter (Task 1) and an essay (Task 2)
4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)
A one-on-one interview with an IELTS examiner involving introduction, a short speech, and a discussion. This may be scheduled up to 7 days before or after the other sections.
Scoring:
Each section is graded on a band score from 1 to 9, with an overall band calculated as the average.
Most universities require: 6.0–7.5 overall
Immigration often requires: 6.0+ in each band for PR
Why is IELTS Important for Indian Students?
Mandatory for admission to most universities in UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand
Required for student visa and PR applications
A good IELTS score improves your visa approval chances
Many scholarships and funding options require proof of English proficiency
